By Author Ty Langston: CRAVE
As a reporter for the Wakefield Post, Harper Erkstine has seen everything. From murders to robberies, all of her recent stories have ended with tragic consequences so great, that she began to question if she made the right career choice for herself.
While all of her friends were dating, or going to clubs, she was winning journalism awards for covering the latest drive-by shooting or a home invasion that cost someone she knew, their lives.
She loved her job, it was rewarding to be a crime solver and get to the truth of the matter. As much as she loved her job, but the hours of a Metro beat reporter began to descend her into burn out mode.
She craved balance. A break, a welcome distraction every now and then. She forgot what it was like to have fun, to take a breath, smell the roses.
Was it wrong to want a great career and to have some kind of a personal life? She couldn’t remember the last time she had a date or danced with someone from the opposite sex.
In the middle of working on a missing person’s story that has rocked her town to the core, Harper decides as a favor to her friend and colleague to do a feature on local an up and coming rock band, called ‘Crave.’
It was a break from her routine, but Harper soon discovers that this band may have ties to the missing person, not only does she question why, but she also finds there is more to this band than just their music.

By Author Tigris Eden: The Genesis Project
Old earth has been deemed unsuitable for life, New Earth is home. With the Uni-War over, races have joined together in order to sustain their way of life. All life was deemed worth saving, but only one race failed to submit. Humans.
Now extinct, humans are a thing of the past, or at least their way of life. The people of New Earth won’t acknowledge their hand in the human’s eradication, but they have benefited from it. Dr. Vaggo Blackmore has found the answer, he’s restored his races way of life- sustenance through farming. The one thing that will give them back their long lives….. Blood: human blood.
Biologically engineered in a lab, Genesis Blackmore has always been different. Her father has told her it’s due to her enhancements, the Federated Council sees her as a genetic mutation; and her fellow peers see her as the shiny new toy. Gen has had better days.
Everyone on New Earth has milky white skin, platinum blonde hair, and electric blue eyes. It’s the norm. Genesis’ glossy, black hair, ice blue eyes ringed by gold, would have almost made her socially acceptable- if it wasn’t for her honey, almond skin and blue, gold veins. In a sea of milky white she alone is the dark anomaly.
All Pars get their life’s nourishment through blood plasma. All Pars find their match through the tasting. Gen can do neither, forbidden by her father to do so. She can neither taste, nor be tasted. Something that’s never bothered her until now.

Chapter One

The young woman sat across from her computer and endlessly scribbled in her notebook.
With headphones in place, the frantic pace of the newsroom where she worked didn’t serve as deterrence from her looming deadline. Despite her exhaustion due to the long nights and weekend hours she had spent writing award-winning stories, the early evening with its bright fluorescent lights and the smell of the newsroom favorites of chicken parm and pepperoni pizza from Freddy’s Pizzeria gave her the temporary boost she needed to finish her story

She was used to it; in fact she reveled in it. Writing stories about people, places and the things in her community always intrigued her; from people doing well for others to the popular teenage girl that disappeared without a trace. All had a story to tell.

“Harper? Harper?” Ellen, the assistant to the Editor and friend to Harper, asked while she knocked on the corner of the young reporter’s desk.

Startled, the young woman jumped after seeing the ruby red tips of Ellen’s finger’s tapping on the steel desk out of the corner of her eye. “Jeez, Ellen! What the?” Harper asked as she yanked off the headphones from her ears and placed them around her neck

The assistant’s mouth curved into an impish grin .She loved teasing her good friend when she could; especially during deadline hour. “I’m sorry, Harp. Didn’t mean to scare you, but Ross wants to know how the story is going?”

Frazzled, Harper took her light brown mane and began to pile it tall on top of her head. She surfed through an endless sea of notes in her notebook. Despite the age where computers laptops and tablets reigned, there were some things she preferred to do the old-fashioned way.

She raised an eyebrow and glanced at her watch. She dreaded when her editor did this to her. At her current pace, she could finish, tighten and send it to him with three hours to spare. He either wanted her off this story, or he wanted her to do another story on top of this one, which was already front page news. With a pensive stare, she had an inkling she would dread her answer.

“Nearly done. Tell him he’ll have it in an hour.” She told Ellen.

Ellen smiled while she wrote it on her own notebook. “Ok, hon. I will. He would have emailed everyone, but someone hacked into his email and since he’s at the editor’s and publisher’s conference he wanted an update,.. and a favor…”

Anxious, Harper continued to play with her pen, the gnawing sensation that nagged at the pit of her stomach only justified her concern. Shit, I just want to get out of here, eat a decent meal and actually turn in at an hour that didn’t include the wee hours of the morning.

“A favor? Is he serious?” Harper asked. Her frustration with her editor, Ross began to increase with each new story. No one else kept the hours she did or would work the crazy schedule she had been working these days. Regardless of what the request was, she wished for once, her boss could ask someone else to do something besides her.

Ellen sat on the corner of her friend’s desk. Just before she sat, she pulled out a blue folder and placed it in front of Harper. “He is and this is for me as well. Ever hear of the band Crave?”

Harper’s brown eyes narrowed. Her stomach continued to churn which usually meant that all hopes for a peaceful evening would now be dashed by a friend with whom she could never say no to; and an editor who aggravated her more than her own parents. “No, I haven’t.” she answered, “Why?” she continued with some hesitation.

Ellen’s eyes widened with excitement. “Really? You never heard of them? Crave is one of the rising stars in the music industry. They are a homegrown band in Wakefield that is on the cusp of national stardom. You seriously have no idea who they are?”

Harper placed her pen down and opened the navy blue folder Ellen had placed in front of her “I honestly haven’t, El, and as you know I’m a huge music lover. What kinds of stuff do they play?” she asked.

Ellen pulled out a CD from her sweater pocket and placed it carefully on the desk. “There’s a demo in the folder, but this is their latest EP they’ve been promoting. One of their singles is now number 10 on Billboard’s new artists’ chart.” Harper’s eyes glimmered with delight. “They’re from here? That’s fantastic.” Ellen nodded. “Yes, they are. Well, the guitarist is, Chace Lawson. Apparently, the others are from all over the country. I’ve never heard or seen women get so worked up over hot, sweaty men in leather in my life until I went to a Crave show.” Harper opened the folder and snickered. She could understand why. The five men were quite easy on the eyes. In particular, the one in the center with the long-layered brown hair and eyes that appeared to be burning at hole straight through her.

“I can see why. They’re gorgeous. Especially the brooding one in the middle.” Harper said as she picked up the black and white photo of the band. Ellen got up sat back on the desk and placed herself directly in front of her good friend.

“That would be Cass St. Marie. Pictures don’t do him justice. He’s just not handsome, he’s beautiful. He’s also got this southern drawl that’s just so damn intoxicating that a girl could get drunk just from him saying ‘hello’. And the way he moves his body, from his arms to those corded thighs, there is something about him that’s electric.” Ellen said

Harper let out a huge laugh. Ellen was known as the princess of pessimism, for her to gush so much about a man and his music intrigued her. She knew that by the end of this conservation, she would want to listen to what all the fuss was about.

“I have never known you to get as excited about something like this. So, what do I have to do with this?” Harper asked in an attempt to hide her curiosity.

“The band’s performing later at the Star 80 club. It’s a showcase with some pretty cool A and R guys, other industry execs and so on. Anyways, since Dave, our beloved music writer, has come down with the flu, Ross thought of the next best person for the job.”

“Me? I love music as much as the next person, but what do I know about writing some fluff piece on a rock band?”

“If I remember correctly, wasn’t it your missing girl Darien Anderson who was on her way to a concert the night she disappeared?” Ellen asked.

Harper’s face quickly grew serious. All color was gone. “She was…. She was on her way to a concert, but the police report never stated which one.”

“Her mom, earlier on the T.V. news, told another reporter that it was a Crave concert. So, I called Chace and he said he and the band knew her. They had seen her at some of their shows. Maybe you could talk to them to see if they have any info on her disappearance, while you’re doing your fluff piece that Ross would like you to do for Dave.”

Figures. This is so close to deadline. All I want to do is sleep. I’ve been working non-stop on Darien Anderson’s case for two weeks now.’ Harper thought.

“He said the deadline for the feature isn’t until the end of the week, but since Dave won’t be back by then and the two of you have similar taste in music, Ross and I thought you’d be perfect for job.” Ellen insisted.

“El, I’m surprised that you didn’t want do this. You’ve always wanted to write. Here’s your chance.”

Harper encouraged. The long hours began to creep up on her; she placed the photo down and put
her hand underneath her chin. This was the one night she had in several months where she could relax and get to bed at a decent hour. The months of working nights, six days a week had begun to take its toll.

Ellen nodded. “Not this one. Not right now. This story ties into yours. Even if Dave were here, he would have given it to you based on that angle. I can’t help but think something else is up. There’s a link with all of this somehow.”

“Okay. I’ll do it. You knew I would. What time is their show?”

“Eight. So if you finish, get yourself a little catnap, shower, a bite to eat; you’ll be all set to drool over the hotties tonight. Wish I could go with you, but Ross has me running the night meeting and prepping for tomorrow.”

Harper sighed and rolled her eyes. It was a miracle their paper got out each day. With the way their editor-in-chief, Ross drove them all crazy, today was one of the most peaceful days she had due to him not only being at his conference for a week, but due to his email being hacked.

“Man, the two of you owe me big time when the Anderson story is over. Let me finish this update and get out of here.” Ellen squealed with delight. “Great! Ross said he’ll treat you for a dinner and a weekend off.”

Harper’s weariness turned quickly into a wide grin as she put on her headphones and turned on her iPod “Sold.” She told Ellen as she turned around and began to tap away at her keys. On her playlist for the early evening? A little Nina Simone to calm and focus her on the task at hand. The more she typed with the beat of the music, the closer her goal became. Dinner? She could eat anywhere, but preferred her junk food diet of burgers, subs, pizza and cheese fries. Weekend off? This enticed her a great deal. She hadn’t had an entire weekend off in two years. She’d forgotten what it was like to sleep in on a Saturday or take a ride through town without going to check on a source first. If she could pull it off, it’d be a welcome treat. For the briefest of moments, she hated Ross and Ellen. She hated how they played on her talents to get them what they wanted. But, usually when they did this, the end result was worth it. It was one feature. How hard could it be?

As the legendary’s songstresses vocals seeped through her headphones she typed the end of her follow up story. Before she pressed send, she said aloud, One story down, another to go. The shit I get myself into. Something’s telling me that I’m going to regret this one.
